Mostly printed "Statement of Forage issued to and consumed by the Public Animals under my direction in the field during the month of December 1862." Lt. John S. Schultze, Aid de Camp and Acting Chief Quartermaster, 2nd Division, 2nd Army Corps, wrote, "In consequence of the scarcity of Hay, I was compelled to increase the ration of Grain to 14 lbs per Day per Horse & 12 lbs per Mule." This document was filled out for the month that included the disastrous Union defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Sedgwick signed John Sedgwick, Maj. Genl. as the commanding officer of the II Corps, which he led from December 26, 1862 to January 26, 1863, thus dating this document to within a short span of time. He had just returned to duty after being wounded at the Battle of Antietam.
