Letter Signed
Irish nationalist and
leader of the Young Irelanders in the Rebellion of 1848 who later
led the Union's Irish Brigade during the Civil War (1823-1867).
LS signed "Very respectfully yrs, Thomas Francis Meagher, Brigadier
General Commanding," one page, lightly-lined 8 x 5.5, APril 27,
1863. Letter to Assistant Adjutant General Major John Hancock,
written from the headquarters of the Irish Brigade in Falmouth,
Virginia, In full: I have the honor to report, that I resume
command of the Brigade this morning."
In fine condition, with show-through from
mounting remnants to reverse.
Thomas F. Meagher, (1823-67) Union Brigadier
General - New York
A native of Ireland, Meagher organized and led a Zouave
company of the 69th New York Militia at First Bull Run.
Promoted to brigadier early the following year, he organized the
Irish Brigade, subsequently leading the unit in all the Army of the
Potomac battles from the Peninsula Campaign through
Chancellorsville, most notably in the brigade's charge of the
Confederate position on Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg.
