War-date signature with rank "A. A. Humphreys Maj. Genl. CHF. Staff" which would date the signature from 1863-1864 when he was Chief of Staff for Maj. General George G. Meade.

Humphreys saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg and served as Meade's chief-of-staff.  After the war, he was appointed chief of engineers and was instrumental in the formulation of the policy for control of the Mississippi River.
