Humphreys saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg and served as Meade's chief-of-staff.  After the war, he was appointed chief of engineers and was instrumental in the formulation of the policy for control of the Mississippi River.

Autograph Letter Signed, 7.5" x 9.75", Humphreys' handwritten orders for Union Brevet Brigadier General Henry Larcum Abbott, a longtime associate of Humphreys who would be instrumental in the subsequent work of the two in the development of a plan to control the flooding of the Mississippi River.  Vertical endorsement on left, approving Abbott's reimbursement for mileage on the expedition.

New Orleans, La., Jan. 27, 1866.  Maj. & Bvt. Col. H. L. Abbott, U.S. Engineers, New Orleans, La.  Colonel, You will proceed to Memphis, Tenn., by way of the Miss[issippi] river, touching at the points indicated in your detailed instructions, and after completing the duties noted for you at Memphis, will proceed to the steamboat Flora on the Miss[issippi] river near Napoleon, Ark[ansas], or Old Bolivar C[our]t H[ouse], Miss[issippi] or wherever she may be.  Very Respectfully, Your ob[edien]t

Excellent overall, with two horizontal folds and a few light stains.
