Humphreys saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg and served as Meade's

engineers and was instrumental in the formulation of the policy for
control of the Mississippi River.
Autograph Letter Signed, 7.5" x 9.75", Humphreys'
handwritten orders for Union Brevet Brigadier General Henry Larcum
Abbott, a longtime associate of Humphreys who would be instrumental
in the subsequent work of the two in the development of a plan to
control the flooding of the Mississippi River. Vertical

the expedition.
