James Madison
Document Signed
(1751-1836) Fourth President of the United States considered the
"Father of the Constitution", he authored the Federalist papers and
sponsored the Bill of Rights.
RARE Document signed dated 2/20/1808 as
Secretary of State. A passport for William Lewis "an Officer
of the Navy of the United States, and charged with dispatches from
this Government" signed boldly "James Madison". On the reverse
are Endorsements from the French Ambassador to the United States
French General Louis Marie Turreau and British Ambassador David
Montagu Erskine giving their consent. The French "Minister de
la Police Generale" also gives approval.
While ship's passports signed by Madison are fairly common,
personal passports are not and are very desirable. There has
been some museum conservation repaired tears otherwise boldly
written and in fine condition.
Conservation framed so both sides of the document can be seen.
