James Madison
Document Signed

(1751-1836) Fourth President of the United States considered the "Father of the Constitution", he authored the Federalist papers and sponsored the Bill of Rights.

RARE Document signed dated 2/20/1808 as Secretary of State.  A passport for William Lewis "an Officer of the Navy of the United States, and charged with dispatches from this Government" signed boldly "James Madison".  On the reverse are Endorsements from the French Ambassador to the United States French General Louis Marie Turreau and British Ambassador David Montagu Erskine giving their consent.  The French "Minister de la Police Generale" also gives approval.

While ship's passports signed by Madison are fairly common, personal passports are not and are very desirable.  There has been some museum conservation repaired tears otherwise boldly written and in fine condition.
