In full: "Dear Major, I was glad to have a chance to give you the appointment of Q. M. Genl. for the state.  I wish it was of more value than a merely honorary thing.  Heretofore, (that is until two years ago) it has always been an office with duties and compensation. It may become it again at present however you are expected to dine with the Commander in Chief when you visit Columbus.  A duty which neither I nor Mrs. commander & C. will excuse you from.  My regards to Mrs. Turner.
