Good content autograph letter signed dated 10/11/1837 as a Representative from New York to Maris B. Pierce the recording secretary for the Seneca Indian Nation and one of the First Indians to receive a college degree.  The letter sends thanks to Pierce for sending him a copy of the proceedings of a meeting of the Seneca Nation that was sent to Martin Van Buren.  This meeting was a protest against the actions of John F. Schermerhorn, a government agent whose specialty was removing Indians from their land.
