Stowe quotes from a passage contained in her 1854 book Sunny Memories of Foreign Lands: "There are souls like the alabaster vase of ointment, very precious, which shed no perfume of devotion because a great sorrow has never broken them." Stowe borrowed the quote, with some alteration, from the original found in Matthew 26:7 and had used it to describe Sir Walter Scott's attitudes toward Christianity. It is dated from Hartford, August 26 (no year).
