Sam Houston

Sam Houston 1793-1863 - American soldier and political leader.
Best known for his role as commander in chief of the forces of the
Texan provisional government, which defeated Mexican troops under
Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto (April 21, 1836). As a
result, he became the first President of the Republic of Texas
(1836-38), and served as the first U.S. Senator for Texas (1846-59)
when it was admitted into the Union.
